Big blockbuster action movies have a lot of spectacular special effects that take months to perfect before the movie is released. Action Movie FX puts users in the seat of a big-budget movie editor to produce home movies with beautiful special effects within seconds. The process couldn’t be any easier and the results look great, especially after some practice.

I downloaded Action Movie FX when it was first released earlier this year. At that time there were only a few free effects that could be used with the option to purchase more within the app itself. Since that time, the developers have added in several new free effects and added more in-app purchases. Many of the new effects are based off Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which will appeal to the many fans of the Call of Duty games. I first used the app to make some humorous videos of missiles blowing up my cat. She constantly invaded my room anytime the door was open so I produced a movie of her getting blown sky high. I quickly shared it around my social networks and got some good buzz from friends and family wanting to know how I made the movie. Now, Action Movie FX has become so popular that it has been named as the App Store’s app of the year for 2012.

Action Movie FX makes the process of creating a video so simple that even little kids will be able to produce their own movies. First step is to choose an effect. Next, the app displays a target that is used to show where the effect will be inserted once the video is completed. Users will need to hold the camera steady while filming for at least five seconds to prevent any blurring. Once the video has been captured, users can edit the timing of the effect and then send the final video to be processed. Final movies can then be shared via Facebook, emailed or saved to the camera roll.

There is a reason why this app has been named the app of the year. It does exactly what it advertises and does it with a lot of style. The interface couldn’t be easier and users are given the chance to come up with some very unique movie clips. I like to use this app to get a laugh but it can certainly be used to create some more dramatic material. For anyone who hasn’t already given Action Movie FX a try, it’s well worth the download, especially now that it has been enhanced and updated with more free content.
