Huge iOS and Android Activity on Christmas Day

This article is more than 10 years old.

Flurry detects over 90% of new iOS and Android devices activated worldwide each day since more than 260,000 apps use Flurry Analytics.  On December 25 Flurry estimates that there were 17.4 million new iOS and Android devices activated vs. an average of 4 million each day from December 1st to the 20th.  The 17.4 million devices compares to an estimated 6.8 million iOS and Android devices last Christmas, a 156% increase year over year.

Apps downloads also surged but not at the same rate as device activations.  The 328 million app downloads on December 25 compares to an estimated 242 million downloads last year, a 36% increase.

It would not be prudent to more than double last years sales of iPhones (37 million), iPads (15.4 million), Kindle’s and other Android devices but these metrics do indicate that sales of all these devices were strong during the holidays.  While these are only two data points I do believe this is another indication that Apple could sell 50 million iPhones (35% increase year over year) and 23.5 million iPads (52% increase year over year) in the quarter.

Tablets were on average 20% of device activations vs. smartphones at 80% from December 1st to the 20th but surged to 51% on December 25.  It is not to surprising that tablets were the gift of choice vs. smartphones.  Smartphones require more thought given that it has to be tied to a carrier and the gift receivers phone may not have fulfilled the contract term.  Flurry estimates that the tablet leaders were Apple iPads, iPad Minis and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7” tablet with the Kindle growing several thousand percent over its December 1st to 20th baseline.  This does indicate that Kindle’s are huge gifting items vs. iPads which are also bought for various reasons and not just as gifts.
