Strategy Analytics surveyed 2,285 US consumers asking them what electronics product they were planning to buy in the next 12 months. Apple’s iPhone was the leader with 23.5% of the respondents planning on buying one closely followed by Android smartphones at 21.6%. This is one indication that the iPhone should be able to retain a small lead over Android smartphones during 2013. Strategy Analytics also mentions that there has been a strong increase in interest in mobile phones and also TVs.
It is interesting to see that the next two items most often mentioned were Portable PCs at 17.4% and iPads at 15.3% of respondents since tablets can't do as much as a PC. Closely lumped together were Smart TVs (12.7%), Digital Cameras (12.5%), Blueray Disc Players (12.2%) and Desktop PCs at 12.1%.
Rounding out the next three devices were Android tablets at 10.7%, E-readers at 10.6% and a bit surprising was Portable Macs at 9.8%. I think this is a bit surprising since Portable Macs are a good amount more expensive than Portable PCs and especially E-readers. However, Strategy Analytics has noticed a notable decline in intention to buy Portable PCs and Macs.
