Sure, there's the built in panorama feature for iOS cameras, but apps like AutoStitch Panorama still have an important role to play. New to iPad, this app is very easy to use and produces some decent results, providing the user has a steady hand.

The app explains each step as the user goes along, via an overlay help system, but it's hardly needed thanks to the simplicity involved. All that's required is to press the relevant button and start taking a photo. Each image forming the panorama is done by moving the iPad along until a green outline forms, indicating it's the optimum time to take the image. Working on a warning system, there are orange and red outlines to demonstrate when not to take the photo, so it's quite hard to get wrong at any time. It's this simplicity that continues throughout the app, right down to making minor changes.

Autoexposure and cropping play an important role, as well as the ability to save individual images separately for reference at a later date, as well as adjusting stitching options manually. The resolution can be adjusted as well as the blending, giving users plenty of options to make sure the image is just how they want. The very fact that each part of the panorama is only taken when the user hits the button, rather than automatically saves plenty of issues with focus, something that has afflicted many similar apps in the past. It's also possible to stitch together previously saved photos, which produces some interesting results.

Arguably, AutoStitch Panorama is a little on the expensive side at $2.99. A more palatable amount would have been under the $2 mark, but it offers mostly all someone could need. There's even basic sharing functionality, although this is restricted to Facebook, Twitter and email. I'd have appreciated some anti shake settings, given the weight of older iPads affecting things, but other than that, AutoStitch Panorama is an excellent app for creating panoramas.
