Lenovo Wants A Piece Of Apple, Samsung

This article is more than 10 years old.

The PC world may be dying, but tell that to Lenovo in China.

After reporting record high revenues in the third quarter, Lenovo is feeling a bit frisky.

"The most important strategy for Lenovo is to further explore mobile devices where Apple and Samsung dominate the market," said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's CEO in a story published by China Daily on Friday.

The company has already moved in the tablet space and while it may be a latecomer, Yang said that they plan to take on mobile powerhouses Apple (AAPL) and Samsung going forward, the China Daily reports.

There has already been some talk that Lenovo was buzzing around BlackBerry (RIMM) to buy out its operating system, though that may depend on how well the BlackBerry 10 is received.  For many, BlackBerry is no longer dead, but it's still dying.

According to industry research firm IDC, Lenovo is already the world's third-largest maker of mobile devices, including tablets, laptops and smartphones. Lenovo doubled its smartphone sales in China in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, and its smartphone business is finally profitable.

Lenovo sold 9 million smartphones in China over the past three months, the company said this week.

Lenovo also claims to have a larger smartphone market share in China than ZTE Corp and Huawei Technologies Co.

"Since Lenovo's smartphone business is starting to become profitable, it is allowing the company to invest more in product development, marketing and building distribution channels, which are key for it to build a sustainable business in the global smartphone industry," Wang Jingwen, an analyst at Canalys, told the paper.
