Valentine’s Day: Sweet Tech Gifts Under $50
Valentines Day: Sweet Tech Gifts Under $50

The holiday most-associated with love and passion certainly didn't have such romantic beginnings. Saint Valentine's life was plagued with Christian martyrdom, persecution, execution, and, well, you get the point. It wasn't until Geoffrey Chaucer penned "Parlement of Foules" in 1382 that the holiday took a more tender turn. The poem, which Chaucer wrote to celebrate King Richard II and his betrothed, spoke of Valentine's Day (or, as Chaucer called it, Volantynys day) and birds mating (dreamy, huh?).

Centuries later, the holiday is big business. According to the Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey commissioned by the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers are expected to spend 18.6 billion on the holiday this year. It's no wonder that many poo poo Valentine's Day as nothing more than a Hallmark-created holiday.

Spending aside, the holiday does hold value to many, including myself. I still have many fond memories of celebrating the holiday with my family—yes, family. For my mother, especially, it was an opportunity to show us kids how much she loved us. The day always began with a bowl of "special" cereal (hundreds of little hearts that she painstakingly cut out in all colors and sizes). And then there were presents—little tokens of her love and affection. This tradition continues still today (and I'd bet that special box of cereal is tucked away in her house somewhere).

This year, as in years past, my Valentines will include my family and close friends. For most, it'll be a specially-selected Valentine's Day card. (Yes, the kind you can actually hold in your hand.) Some will get something tucked inside that card, like an iTunes gift card, or a subscription to Netflix or MoviePass. Others may receive one of the sweet tokens included in this gallery. All of the items I've gathered here are oh-so-apropos for the holiday.

And, if this gallery of gifts is a little too tame for what you have in mind for your Valentine, you can venture over to our "adult" gift guide.

1. Pixel Heart Heat Changing Mug

Pixel Heart Heat Changing Mug
$11.99
The image on this mug reacts to heat, so fill it with a hot beverage and the heart will turn red. As the beverage cools, so goes the heart (meaning it goes back to black).

2. Marc Jacobs Heart Earbuds

Marc Jacobs Heart Earbuds
$42
These little heart earbuds remind me of Valentine's Day candy. They even come in "holiday" colors, including pink and purple.

3. Tunes For Two Heart Headphone Splitter

Tunes For Two Heart Headphone Splitter
$11.99
Nothing says I love you like a willingness to share. This splitter lets two sets of headphones share the music from one device. The 2-by-2-inch device comes in pink and red.

4. Jeweled Heart Mouse

Jeweled Heart Mouse
$19.95
This heart-shaped wired mouse is covered in rhinestones. Oh, and it's very pink.

5. X-Doria Valentine's Collection

X-Doria Valentine's Collection
$29.99 to $39.99
Looking for a case that screams "I love you?" Look no further. The Valentine's collection from X-Doria features cases for your iPhone 5 (Dash Icon Fluttering Hearts and Dash Icon Rising Hearts) and iPad mini (SmartStyle Love's Armor and SmartStyle XO).

6. GreenHouse Love Flash Memory

GreenHouse Love Flash Memory

Sure, you could get a 2GB flash drive for one-third of the price of this one, but it wouldn't be nearly as heartfelt.
