In a statement Wednesday, Lenovo said Jerry Yang was appointed as an observer and will attend board meetings in which he will share his experience as an Internet and technology pioneer.

However, Lenovo noted that as a board observer, Jerry Yang will not have the power to vote at any board meeting and may not exercise any other rights of a director at such meeting.

In the statement, Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo, said: "Jerry's appointment as an observer to our board furthers Lenovo's reputation as a transparent international company...Jerry's perspective, experience and proven entrepreneurial spirit will help us continue to drive growth and expand our business."

Jerry Yang said in the statement: "I am honored to join Lenovo as a board observer at an exciting time in its growth. I look forward to leveraging my past experience as a technology entrepreneur and innovator to provide advice as Lenovo looks at new areas of growth."

"I believe that Lenovo's strong leadership team, coupled with their innovative strategy positions them well for continued success as a global leader in technology," said Jerry Yang.

He had resigned from Yahoo in his posts as ">director and CEO in January 2012. During his tenure at Yahoo, he had infamously turned down a takeover offer from Microsoft in 2009, a move which observers said was impossible for the firm to recover from.
