Microsoft has indeed improved support for laptop trackpads in Windows 8, but some issues still exist, so the company now decided to join forces with some of its partners to address all problems in Windows 8.1.

As The Verge writes, the Softies announced at the BUILD developer conference that it was trying together with Intel, Elan, and Synaptics to bring multi-touch and gesture support for laptop trackpads in the new operating system.

The company is focusing on what it calls “Precision Tochpad,” a new technology that would more or less turn the trackpad into a small touch-screen supporting a wide variety of gestures.

Windows principal program manager James Clarke showcased the new tech at BUILD and while it admitted that it could take a while until PC manufacturers adopt it, he also revealed that the first laptops offering Precision Touchpad support are very likely to be here by the end of the year.

"These devices will be coming to market in some limited availability this holiday and then shipping in volume over the course of the next year," he confirmed.
