Apple Could Sell 13 Million iPhone 5Ss & 5Cs In Just 10 Days

One of the problems that Apple has launching new iPhones in late September is that even though every iPhone release sells more than the release before it, they don’t actually bump Apple’s quarterly numbers as much as they could.

Why? Let’s take this year as an example. All signs point to the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C launching on September 20th, but Apple’s financial quarter ends on September 30th. That gives Apple just ten days to sell as many iPhones as possible to bump up their quarterly results. It’s the October – December quarter where Apple sees the most iPhone sales.

So how many iPhones can Apple sell in just ten days? According to Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves, a lot. He thinks Apple can sell up to 13 million iPhones before the quarter closes.

In a note to clients, Hargreaves wrote: ““We expect Apple to launch two new iPhones at its Sept. 10 event, an iPhone 5S and an iPhone 5C, which we believe is essentially an iPhone 5 with a different case. We expect these refreshes, along with the potential for incremental distribution of the iPhone, to drive improved unit volume, stabilized gross margin and accelerating operating profit in the coming quarters.”

At the end of the day, Hargreaves sees Apple selling 31 million iPhones this quarter. Of those, 10 million he thinks will be sold in just the last ten days of the quarter, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. That’s a huge number — 1 million units a day — but Hargreaves thinks thay with “extremely efficient supply chain management” the number could go even higher.

Either way, those would be record sales. It appears, as with previous iPhone launches, Apple will ultimately be constrained by how many iPhone 5S and 5C devices it can get into customer hands, not by demand.
