Pyrographythe art of burning intricate designs onto wood – is now possible on iOS, giving users the opportunity to create beautiful hand-drawn designs on realistic wooden canvases, without the headache-inducing fumes.

The interface is a cinch to get used to. If users tap with two fingers, they will bring up a menu which they can use to set line thickness, choose between a Pyrography pen, a magnifying glass, or their finger (much easier) to draw with, and select or customize their canvas.

After choosing one of 11 different backgrounds, users can upload a photo from their camera roll, which Pyrography will etch into the wood as a base to draw over. It helps with inspiration for those of us (myself included) who may not be the most artistic or creative people in the world. However, once I started making use of the different line thicknesses, I noticed a considerable difference in the quality of my drawings. Going from child-like doodles to layered, shaded drawings definitely gave me a sense of progression and improvement.

Although the wood effects are very nice (who doesn't love wood effect?), there isn't much more to the app than simply drawing. The lack of color and different drawing utensils means that it essentially becomes drawing onto brown backgrounds with a brown pen. Pyrography is certainly a cool art form in real life, but as an app, and without that lovely (but overpowering) smell of burning wood, its appeal is bound to be short-lived. Sure, it's cool to experiment with for a while, but the fact that it can't really be used for serious sketching or handwriting purposes makes me wonder how long this app can entertain users before they pass it off as a novelty.
