Dungeon Quest does a lot of things right, but ultimately forgets about one of the core components expected in any RPG, which is ironically even mentioned in the game’s title: a quest.

Shiny Box Games clearly aimed to focus all of their attention on Dungeon Quest's gameplay mechanics. And when I say "all," I really do mean that quite literally. The game sets off with players choosing between one of the 2 classes available (with a third said to come soon). They are then plunged directly into battle, with no hint as to why they are fighting or what they’re fighting for. It really is too bad, but the good news is that it’s all up-hill from there. Once players get over the confusion that inevitably comes after starting the game without any kind of introduction, explanations, or a mere goal to strive for, Dungeon Quest actually becomes a lot of fun and tough to put down.

The in-game graphics look pretty good and the animations themselves are very fluent and responsive to the player’s touch. All monsters killed drop loot, so there will be plenty of gear for the user to choose from with better and better equipment coming up as one moves forward. Rare equipment can also be found, which often gives the player a genuinely  huge boost in stats and damage dealt. For example, I found a rare sword in one of the first floors that hasn’t been bested by a normal one even after my character leveled up a 10th time.

Whether they choose the warrior or mage class, players will find plenty of cool abilities to play around with. To name my favorites so far, there is the ability to throw the character’s massive sword for area damage, a totem that deals damage to every monster that comes near it, and others. There’s a good amount of variety available to keep players hooked to to their devices. They will be able to take on outrageous numbers of monsters at the same time, often without even breaking a sweat.

Plenty of in-app purchases are available to enhance the player’s experience, but while the game can be played entirely without them, players will sometimes feel like they are missing out. For instance, many pets are only available via IAPs, and the ones that can be purchased with gold are expensive, which means players will have to play a good portion of the game without one.

Ultimately though, I believe the biggest issue lies with the complete absence of a storyline. It would’ve been fine if Dungeon Quest was an online Action-RPG, but it isn’t. And with singleplayer being the only available option, one can’t help but wonder about what exactly stood in the way of giving this title even just a hint of personality.

In the end, the lack of a story makes Dungeon Quest rather forgettable, but no less entertaining. It’s kind of like one of those summer blockbusters that are really fun to watch, but forgotten completely once the season has passed.
