Z Hunter Review

As a sniper in Z Hunter, players have to protect some cowering humans from a zombie horde, picking the undead off one by one with a variety of weapons and power-ups. The primary weapon is a rifle of various sorts and the secondary weapon an automatic machine gun, both of which are upgradable to ensure maximum zombie kill-age.

Some power-ups and gadgets are on hand for those trying times too, including a snack bar to increase focus and initiate a slow-mo segment, hollow bullets that cause 3 times the damage, and a radar that highlights zombies as well as a special box hidden somewhere within each level. When shot, this elusive box will gift players a beneficial or a harmful surprise, it's simply up to them to decide whether to open it or not!

The last shot of each level will always play out in slow-mo, so players can savor that last splatter of blood and rag-doll crumpling. It's always satisfying because Z Hunter makes players work for a kill, ensuring that a stray bullet will always miss its target, even if only by inches. It makes those moments when zombies are mere meters away from a brain-flavored main course that much more tense.

There are a wealth of levels available over 4 modes in 4 different locations - with a variety of weather effects, deteriorating environments, and super zombies to contend with - so longevity definitely isn't an issue here. What might be an issue is that the old freemium tricks are at play in Z Hunter, from the energy system to the waiting periods for upgrades, but to be fair it doesn't really become a problem until later in the game. Still, no one likes these diabolical schemes, especially in a game that would be worthy of a premium price.

Nevertheless, Z Hunter is a great shooter and an excellent zombie game. It's bright, detailed visuals are a nice change from other grim, monochrome zombie shooters, and although it definitely owes a lot to other games such as Contract Killer: Zombies, it has it's own style and undeniable fun factor that sets it apart from the horde.
