Back at this year’s WWDC, Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney got up and demoed Epic Zen Garden, an impressive upcoming iOS 8 game which used Apple’s new Metal technology to great effect.

Leap forward a few months, and the free game has finally arrived on iOS — bringing console-quality graphics to users with the latest iPhones, courtesy of Metal and the Unreal Engine 4.

Did we mention it might be the most impressive zen garden game yet?

“Tap to navigate this interactive oasis brimming unmatched detail on mobile,” the game’s developers note. “Swipe back and forth across the entire Sakura tree to make thousands of cherry blossoms swirl in the air, graze the koi pond to summon leagues of fish, and rake the sand with your finger to create subtle designs. Touch the well to bring throngs of butterflies out of hiding.”

Sure, so it’s more of a tech demo than it is a game in some ways, but what a tech demo: offering solid 30fps animation and 1440 x 1080 resolution. It’s available for download from iTunes at this link, compatible with A7- or A8-powered devices, running iOS 8.

If you’re looking for a more impressive way to show off Apple’s latest mobile OS and your iPhone 6 (when the latter arrives) you’re unlikely to find too much that can match this.

Besides, its calming zen garden atmosphere might just help clear your mind of the stress of Apple’s preorder process…
