Nokia phone brand prepares to disappear

Microsoft is moving its Lumia phones to a new home. The software maker is planning to kill off the Nokia and Windows Phone brands this holiday season, and it has now started to move Nokia.com to Microsoft.com in preparation. A new Microsoft Mobile Devices site is launching today, alongside tweaks to Nokia.com that push readers towards Microsoft’s own site. Microsoft appears to be moving each country variant of Nokia.com in stages, but the UK version has moved today. It’s the latest in a series of changes that will see Microsoft eventually let go of the Nokia brand altogether, a move that will likely happen once the next set of Lumia phones launch.

While the Nokia brand is disappearing at Microsoft, it’s not dead altogether. Nokia still exists as a separate company without its phones business, and the Finnish firm is keen to remind everyone of that fact. In a blog post entitled "Nokia brand still very much alive," Nokia’s Barry French details the company’s focus on mapping and telecom infrastructure. "We may not be the same Nokia of several years ago, but we are here, we are strong, and our brand is very much still alive," says French.
