The Silent Age Episode 1 was quite the delight when it bounded onto the App Store last year, promising plenty of adventuring hijinks for free. The Silent Age Episode 2 continues that trend, albeit at a price of $4.99, which is still a great deal.

You play Joe Average as he leaps back and forth between the 70s and the modern day. As before, this is easily achieved thanks to your trusty time machine. It’s a mechanic that changes up what you see in each room or building, and is the kind of thing that means you can’t help but switch between timelines regularly just to see what’s changed.

For the most part, this mechanic is used to get past a closed door or two, which means it’s a little underused in terms of its potential, but it’s relatively easy to forgive The Silent Age Episode 2 for its flaws.

Each puzzle is fairly well designed and logical, with subtle hints thrown your way as and when you get stuck. There are rarely many objects that can be interacted with and each vanishes once you’ve used them, so The Silent Age Episode 2 isn’t the most taxing of titles. Often, you can muddle through with just a modicum of thought. It’s always interesting though, and there are some pleasant twists to keep you keen. Thanks in part to the musical score, it’s also distinctly atmospheric and moody.

Episode 2 is also longer than the first, giving some extra room for more dark humor. Sometimes, The Silent Age Episode 2 feels as if it’s stretching things out, courtesy of backtracking, but it’s still solidly enjoyable for the most part. Thanks to its gentle learning curve and compelling storyline, it’s a fine example of the genre.
