New iOS 8.2 Video Shows Update Looking Good

This article is more than 9 years old.

iOS 8 may rank among the most important Apple updates, but it has also become one of the most controversial. Major positives like the introduction of Apple Pay, Apple HealthKit and long awaited support for widgets and third party keyboards have been overshadowed for many by ongoing crippling Bluetooth, WiFi and battery issues.

The big hope for users still affected by these problems is iOS 8.2. Expected to arrive in early 2015, iOS 8.2 will be the biggest update since the release of iOS 8 itself and now ‘beta 2’ has been shown off on video.

The nine minute video comes from prolific Android and iOS developer Adrian Isen and follows Apple’s release of iOS 8.2 Beta 2 to developers earlier this week. Isen notes it is fast, smooth and so far extremely stable. Everything currently troubled iOS 8 users were hoping for.

The fact Apple is also seeding multiple betas of iOS 8.2 is also a good sign. Apple typically pushes minor updates like iOS 8.1.2 straight to users while it is determined to get the big updates thoroughly tested prior to release.

Being a beta Apple has yet to go into detail regarding what bug fixes and performance improvements iOS 8.2 contains (Geekbench figures in the video show no increase), but for untroubled users the headline news is its support for the upcoming Apple Watch.

Consequently what developers are getting their teeth into right now is iOS 8.2’s new Apple Watch SDK. This allows them to develop the third party apps which will be crucial to the device’s long term success or failure and with successors due to Google's Android Wear models like the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R Apple will want to hit the ground running.

Of course all this will sound like pie in the sky to iPhone and iPad users who are still affected by iOS 8 instabilities. As such while iOS 8.2 promises to deliver the next stage of Apple’s mobile revolution, many will just be hoping it will make their existing devices work properly again.
