How Did Apple Inc. (AAPL) Respond To BBC’s Documentary About Substandard Working Conditions At Factories?

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been accused of giving poor working conditions and fairly low payments for its workers in its supplier factories abroad. BBC aired a documentary on Thursday night, which was titled ‘Apple’s Broken Promises’. BBC had sent its undercover reporters to work in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s factories at China and Indonesia. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has come out with its response on Friday and CNBC’s Eunice Yoon reported about this on CNBC.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)Yoon reported that BBC investigators send reporters in undercover to one of the factories of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s supplier, Pegatron. She added that the undercover reporters found some disturbing conditions for the workers, which did not even meet Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s own standards for working conditions. The undercover reported pointed at excessive working hours and cramped dormitories. She said that most disturbing revelation was that some of the workers complaining about managers holding onto their ID’s, which prevent them from moving freely.

“Tim Cook as well as Apple head, released a statement saying that they were deeply offended by the results of the investigation, because they have put into place so many different measures in order to try and improve the rights of these workers,” Yoon reported.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has its own set of team which travels around and inspects the working conditions of these workers all around the globe. Yoon pointed out Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) can be deeply offended, because, in spite of all these measures and actions some of the working conditions are still bad for workers overseas.

Yoon said that she hasn’t been to that factory, but she added that she visited many other factories, where she talked to workers and felt that working conditions are slowly improving for them due to measures by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). She said that the workers were complaining about the work stress though due to the standard of product that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has maintained. She said that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s measures might not be the only reason for working conditions, she felt that overall economy and living standards demand fair working condition, which also plays its part.
