Apple adds 11 new Flyover locations to Maps

Apple today added new additions to Flyover, the feature offering high resolution 3D imagery of select locales in its Maps app. The 11 new locations include cities from around the globe in places such as Puerto Rico, Texas, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Sweden, England, France, and Denmark.

A full list of new cities below:

Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
Amarillo, TX
Arecibo, Puerto Rico
Beziers, France
Brno, Czech Republic
Cittadella, Italy
Clermont, France
Hamburg, Germany
Helsingborg, Sweden
Liverpool, England
Odense, Denmark

The 12 new cities added this week follow 9 new locations across the EU and U.S. that Apple added last month. Locations added in December included cities in France, Sweden, New Zealand, Wyoming, Arizona, and Arkansas.

Apple has a full list of cities with 3D imagery for the Flyover feature in Maps on its website.

  1. Why doesn’t Apple synchronize the release of the cities with flyover in Maps? The new cities are still not available in Germany

Are doing these really that hard? I feel like fly-over has been around a few years now and there’s still not that many area’s (in the grand scheme of things) covered by it. The longer they go without doing major expansions of the service, the more it just seems gimmicky.

      It’s very time consuming

I believe they use vehicles to capture the flyover data as opposed to satellites. With that being the case, I imagine there’s a huge amount of legal issues that need to be resolved on a city by city basis before they can either get a vehicle to fly over a major city or place their equipment on a vehicle operated by a third party.

From an article I scanned quickly just now, there’s also a percentage of the results that requires manual fix up once the data is mined, and even if that percentage is low I imagine that adds up to a lot of manual clean up work for staff. Given the lacklustre reception to Apple Maps on its initial launch, I imagine they are striving for quality over quantity when it comes to this data.

That said I do agree, it does feel like things are moving at a snails pace. Does anyone have any idea how often cities that are already there get refreshed?

On the plus side, I haven’t had any issues using Apple Maps to get around my local town. I still prefer the TomTom app for navigation, but Apple Maps hasn’t failed me.

Correction: Saint-Tropez was already available in 3D flyover since a long time.

  4. Even though it’s not listed on Apple’s site you can also Flyover Rotterdam (the second largest city in the Netherlands). And not even over Amsterdam (the capital city)

Came here to say just that! Found out about the 3D map of Rotterdam back in December, didn’t know about the flyover in Rotterdam. Also the 3D-map reaches all the way to Dordrecht and a few smaller towns around, also some of Rotterdams suburbs(?) like Schiedam and Ridderkerk.

This is really important because when I’m trying to find a landmark or looking to get directions, a 3D flyover is what i’m looking for… …. …. ….

The list on Apple’s site is very incomplete. Flyover is also available for Budapest, Hungary (and even some of the night our cities) as well.

Still no freaking Ottawa? Really?? Hmmph

Flyover is also available in Aarhus, Denmark.

Apple’s site shows Flyover being available for “Dallas/Fort Worth, TX” but I can’t figure out how to trigger it. Any ideas?
