Official graphic novel app of upcoming Midnight Star sci-fi shooter out now on iOS

iOS Reading
January 31, 2015

On Thursday, Feb. 5, the brand new sci-fi shooter Midnight Star will be launched on iOS. But ahead of the game’s release, its official companion app, Midnight Rises, has been made available on the App Store.

Featuring a story by the Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi (“Redshirts”), artwork by the veteran comic book artist Mike Choi (“X-Force”), and music by Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Midnight Rises is a graphic novel app that introduces the world of Midnight Star:

Set 120 years into our future, Midnight Rises takes readers into an adventure aboard the MSRV-Joplin, a research vessel newly outfitted with military weaponry to explore a mysterious signal coming from within our Solar System. Meet 2nd Lt. Charlie Campbell as he prepares for a mission no training can prepare him for.

As you might expect, Midnight Rises features motion graphics and other elements that let you interact with the story as it unfolds.

But more than just a companion app, it requires you to make choices as you read that will have significant consequences in how you play the Midnight Star game. In turn, playing the game will let you unlock special content in Midnight Rises.

Midnight Rises is available now for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the App Store for free.

The initial download includes the first chapter of the graphic novel free of charge, with the subsequent two chapters available via in-app purchase for $0.99 each. The app also offers a $1.99 in-app purchase for Mike Choi’s alternate cover art.

I like that Midnight Rises is a separate app rather than being a mere prelude included at the beginning of Midnight Star, which is likely to slow down the gaming experience especially for players who are averse to extended backstory presentations. I also like that it has a choice-and-consequence layer tied to the game.

But whether you plan to play Midnight Star or not, Midnight Rises looks to be a great graphic novel in its own right, given the amount of talent behind it.
