VLC is arguably the most versatile video app out there, allowing you to play virtually any video file or format, and starting today it's back in the App Store after a mysterious hiatus.
VLC has been a long-time favorite for those with large video collections who would like to easily play those files on their iPhone or iPad without having to convert them, but the app has had a rocky history and has been removed multiple times in the last few years.
VLC disappeared from the App Store around the time Apple launched iOS 8, according to 9to5Mac, but now it's back and bringing with it some new features such as the ability to play video files recorded in portrait or landscape mode in their native orientation.
You can sync up VLC with your Dropbox, Google Drive, or iTunes account, and streaming your video files is now possible too.
As is true with the desktop version of VLC, the best thing about it is its ability to handle practically anything you throw at it, which takes some of the hassle out of wondering if you'll be able to play videos from your personal collection on your phone or tablet.
VLC is also launching an updated version for Android that's been overhauled with a Material Design aesthetic. The app has also been updated for Mac with a design that meshes better with OSX Yosemite, and Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV are also getting updates as well.
You might not need VLC if you mostly get your videos from services like Netflix, HBO GO, Hulu Plus, and iTunes, but you never know when you might need to play a weird file format, and more importantly, nobody knows how long VLC will remain in the App Store either.
