Apple Watch: six things that could drive you round the bend

The Apple Watch is eagerly anticipated, but can you live with these six irritations?

1. You have to wake it up to check the time

Apple has said that, in order to preserve battery life, its Watch will not have an always-on display. This means that the watch face will only light up when you move your wrist or interact with the screen. For people who are used to wearing a traditional watch, wearing something on your wrist that does not display the time permanently could feel counter-intuitive – or even downright pointless.

2. The battery will need to be charged daily

The battery will last for 18 hours according to Apple, but even less if you are using it all the time. Having your watch run out mid-way through a night on the tiles could prove very annoying if you end up missing the last bus home. Moreover, most people already charge their phone every night, so having to charge a second device is extra hassle.

3. You need to keep your phone in close proximity

The Apple Watch connects to the iPhone using Bluetooth 4.0, and relies on it heavily for its functionality. This means that it will need to be in relatively close proximity to the iPhone in order to receive notifications. Apple has hinted that you will be able to download music on to the watch, and listen to it while doing exercise via a Bluetooth headset, but the without the iPhone by your side you will not be able to receive calls, texts, emails or social media updates.

4. It taps you on the wrist to remind you to move

Tim Cook revealed that if Apple Watch owners sit still for too long, the Watch will "tap them on the wrist" to remind them to get up and move. He described the scene at Apple HQ, where ten minutes before the hour, everyone suddenly gets up and starts walking around. If you're working hard and on a deadline, this feature is liable to drive you up the wall, and even if you disable it, watching other people leaping out of their seats in synchrony could push you over the edge.

5. It has a square face

This is of course a matter of taste, but almost all of the major smartwatch makers and fashion gurus have now admitted that round watch faces look better than square ones. Apple's decision to launch a square watch goes against the grain, and seeing other people walk around with beautiful devices like the LG Watch Urbane and the Huawei Watch could induce envy from Apple watch owners.

6. It will be obsolete in a couple of years

This is arguably a problem facing all smartwatch makers, but the Apple Watch will be obsolete in a couple of years. Unlike traditional luxury watches, which retain their value and functionality over decades and are passed down through generations, the Apple Watch's battery will wear out over time, and cannot be replaced. As with its iPhones and iPads, Apple will regularly release new and improved versions of the Watch, and the previous versions will quickly start to feel outdated.
