Apple iCar Coming This Summer

The long rumored Apple iCar is just around the corner, scheduled to be announced at an Apple media conference at 2 PM PDT on April 1, 2015 in San Francisco. It is expected to be available sometime this summer as a 2016 model.

The Rumor Mill

Apple had been assumed to be working with Volkswagen, but in reality has teamed up with Toyota and GM. Apple has licensed most of the Prius technology from Toyota and a lot of the Chevrolet Volt technology from GM for its groundbreaking car.

Like the Chevy Volt, the iCar (or perhaps Apple Car) will have electrical motors driving each wheel, a battery pack to provide power on the go, and a small flex fuel engine to charge the batteries when necessary. From the Prius, the iCar will have some solar charging, automated cooling vents to keep your iCar from overheating in the sun on summer days, and other green technologies.

Aluminum Unibody

Just like MacBooks, the Mac mini, and iPhones, the entire iCar will be machined from a single block of aircraft grade aluminum. Well, not really, but it will be machined from aircraft grade aluminum to tolerances of 0.001″. The windows will be made of Gorilla Glass and have the same anti-fingerprint finish as the iPhone 6 screen. There will be a built-in iPad mini in the console for GPS, diagnostics, hands-free phone calls, etc.

In a completely Back to the Future move, Apple has licensed the original design specifications of the Delorean DMC-12, a car noted for its stainless steel body and featured role in the Back to the Future trilogy. And as with the iPhone 5S and 6, the iCar will be available in a light aluminum finish, a darker finish, and a gold tone, as in the photos above.

Sorry, but even Apple hasn’t managed to figure out Doc Brown’s flux capacitor, so time travel is not an option.
