There's the 1 percent, and then there's the 6 percent: Those U.S. adults who plan to buy the Apple Watch, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The data—based on responses from 1,829 adults surveyed between April 8 and 14—suggests men are more than twice as likely than women to purchase Cupertino's new smartwatch.

Despite Apple's efforts to market the gadget as a fashion accessory for both sexes, Ipsos found that fewer than 4 percent of women are interested in the customizable watch, versus 9 percent of men.

Using 2014 Census projections, Reuters said that could translate into about 15 million Apple Watch sales, assuming folks follow through with initial plans for purchase.

A hefty haul by any standards, Wall Street estimates place 2015 worldwide sales between 10 million to 32 million.

The Apple Watch officially arrives on April 24, though Apple started taking pre-orders and reservations for in-store fittings on April 10. The pricey wearable starts at $349 for the Sport version, and ranges from $549 to $1,099 for the standard Watch. For those with some extra spending money, the Edition starts at $10,000, though you can spend up to $17,000 for an 18-karat yellow gold or rose gold case.

In its bid to court the fashion set, Apple made a Watch with a specially crafted gold body (and matching gold link bracelet) for Karl Lagerfeld. The designer's bodyguard, Sebastien Jondeau, this week posted a photo of the device to Instagram. No price tag was mentioned.

A number of celebrities have been flashing their wrist bling recently, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, who appeared onstage at this week's Star Wars Celebration wearing the stainless steel model.

Other celebrities who have been spotted wearing Apple Watch include Katy Perry, Drake, and Pharrell.

More demonstrations—Apple Pay, Activity, Workout—are coming soon.

While pre-orders opened last week, few buyers will receive their watch on launch day. As of press time, most models won't arrive until June.
