Most Apple Watch Buyers Still Waiting

Celebs like Beyoncé and Katy Perry might already have their new Apple Watches, but most of those who pre-ordered the new wearable, which officially launched on Friday, aren't so lucky.

Just 376,000, or 22 percent, of the 1.7 million Apple Watches ordered were delivered to U.S. consumers over the weekend, according to new data from the digital commerce researcher Slice Intelligence.

Based on an analysis of the shipping notifications sent to its panel of 2 million online customers, Slice estimates that a remaining 547,000 watches are expected to ship between today and June 11, and 38 percent of orders still don't have a projected delivery date.

Friday was a much quieter product launch for Apple than usual since Apple didn't allow walk-in purchasing. All Apple Watch sales require an online reservation, meaning you can't just walk into a store, grab one off the shelf, and buy it.

The only exception in the U.S. was at Maxfield in Los Angeles, where people lined up to nab a new watch on day one. Other boutiques offering in-store purchases include colette in Paris, Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo, The Corner in Berlin. Apple is expected to start selling the Watch in stores later this summer.

Slice previously said that nearly a million people in the U.S. pre-ordered an Apple Watch the first day they could, spending an average of $503.83 per watch. Most buyers (62 percent) went for the cheaper Apple Watch Sport model and spent $382.83 on average per watch, while those ordering the pricier Apple Watch spent $707.04. Space black aluminum was the most popular case, and black Sport was "by far" the most popular band.
