We heard during Apple’s recent WWDC bash that Apple Pay was heading to the U.K. some time this month, and now we have a date: July 14.

Citing multiple retail sources, the usually reliable 9to5Mac said the Cupertino company’s mobile payments service is set to go live across the country at a slew of stores, among them Waitrose, M&S, Lidl, Starbucks, JD Sports, and also the nation’s post offices.

Launched in the U.S. in October last year, Apple Pay’s U.K. rollout will mark the service’s first move into an overseas market.

However, one notable drawback is the fact that transactions at many retail locations will be limited to just £20 ($31), rising to £30 ($46) in September. It’s a security thing – contactless payment technology for credit cards has been in use in many U.K. stores for nearly 10 years, with the limit designed to prevent stolen cards being used for big purchases.

Of course, such a cap seems unnecessary for Apple Pay as transactions can only take place after the user’s fingerprint has been recognized by the iPhone’s Touch ID sensor.

Apple is encouraging U.K. retailers to update their systems to allow for bigger purchases, explaining on a dedicated page on its website that until the necessary changes are made, “customers might need to insert their card” when the value of the sale exceeds £20. It’s not clear how keen retailers are to carry out the necessary work to accommodate larger transactions with Apple Pay, though it’s not thought to be costly so could take place sooner rather than later.

U.K. customers with an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch can make a contactless payment with their device at locations displaying the Apple Pay acceptance mark at their point-of-sale terminals.

Some 250,000 terminals across the nation will be ready to offer Apple Pay as an option when it rolls out later this month.

U.K. launches investigation into Apple’s cloud gaming restrictions

The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is planning to launch an investigation into Apple's restrictions on cloud gaming. The government agency announced in a press release that it is in the consultation phase of the investigation following a year-long market study into Apple, as well as its rival Google.

The study found that the tech giants had a duopoly over the mobile market that severely restricted competition by third-party developers and deprived them of incentives. In the case of Apple, it's looking into its restrictions on cloud gaming services on the App Store after hearing complaints from U.K. developers who say that such restrictions make it difficult for them to compete in the market, not to mention deprive users who prefer accessing a wide variety of games through cloud gaming that they cannot find in the App Store.

Apple Pay Later is coming to Apple Wallet for more flexible spending

At WWDC 2022, Apple showed off some significant updates and changes coming to Apple Wallet with the launch of iOS 16. The standout feature for Apple Pay with iOS 16 is Apple Pay Later. As the name implies, Apple Pay Later will let you make Apple Pay purchases that you pay later on — more specifically, through payments spread out over a few weeks. Apple Pay Later will be available anywhere that Apple Pay works. More importantly, it lets you make said payments with 0 percent interest and no additional fees. If you use Apple Pay and are trying to plan a big purchase, Apple Pay Later could be a useful feature to have.

Apple also provided an update on its rollout of digital IDs in Apple Wallet. Following Wallet's integration with state driver's licenses in Arizona and Colorado, the company expects 11 more states to follow suit. Currently, the states working on integrating Apple Wallet as a legitimate form of ID are already incorporating it into Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checks at select airports.
