The iPhone might have paved the way for a smartphone revolution in 2007, but the first inklings of such a device date back to a much more historic date.
According to an interview with ex-Apple marketer John Sculley, Steve Jobs was toying with the idea of a “Mac Phone” back in 1984.
Sculley says Jobs was convinced that computers would be consumer products, and wanted to create a desktop phone that was powered by Mac software, as revealed by TechCrunch.
Unfortunately, Jobs’ ideas were held back by him not being able to put the concepts down on paper – that’s where Sculley came in.
“He was not a drawer,
He continued: “I could draw, I had studied design. So Steve would describe it to me, I’d draw it out.”
Jobs reportedly asked for a number of changes to be made, including making the screen a little bigger.

Apparently Apple did eventually make hard prototypes of the phone, of which Sculley received a number of photographs.
Of course, it wasn’t until 23 years later when Steve Jobs formally unveiled a mobile phone running Apple-designed software.
Sculley added: “The best definition of a genius is someone who sees the obvious 20 years ahead of the rest of us.”
