We're working on the activation process, it says

Windows 10 build 10162 is one of the most reliable and stable versions of the new operating system since it hit preview stage in early October 2014.

At least that's what Microsoft has said in a recent announcement, suggesting that this could be one of the latest releases for Windows insiders ahead of the big launch on July 29.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that everything's working well in this build. It turns out that some users who upgraded from previews builds to 10162 cannot activate Windows, and no matter how hard they try or what workaround they come down to, nothing works.

“We're aware of the issue”

Posts on Microsoft's Community forums reveal that this is an issue experienced by several users, and a Microsoft engineer confirms that this is indeed a known problem and the company is working on it.

“We are doing some testing and work on the Activation process. That message is expected and we hope it will go away in the next day. When we have the service back up and running, it should attempt to activate automatically. Until then you can ignore it because I believe other than the UI showing its not activated, it’s not affecting any other use of the system,” he says.

Microsoft is expected to release updates that could correct this issue sometime this week, as the company is also working to make build 10162 available for users enrolled in the slow ring of the Windows Insider program.

When this happens, builds are considered to be stable enough to be shipped to those who don't want to spend too much time diagnosing bugs and issues, so this activation problem is very likely to be addressed before the company presses the green button for slow track users. New ISOs will also be released, just in case you want to perform a clean install.
