Showtime launched its standalone service Tuesday on both Apple TV and the App Store. Apps titled simply Showtime allow users to watch Showtime programming through a monthly subscription independent of cable or satellite TV providers.
The service is priced at US$10.99 per month, and it includes Showtime's original programming past and present such as Dexter, Penny Dreadful, Masters of Sex, and many others, as well as movies and other licensed content on Showtime.

Showtime's move to a standalone option follows a similar move from HBO earlier this year. Both premium subscription services bolting from the cable and satellite hegemony that has controlled television for the past several decades is a significant shift for the industry.
