Thanks for the excellent and very professional podcast as always. This weeks episode was very interesting for me because it addresses how large electronics companies should address competition from emerging industrialised nations, something that Japan has been struggling for some time, and something that Korean companies are also having to deal with.
Bob brought up the point that focusing on the components business may be the better long term strategy for Samsung, and he brought up the fact that the components business had also propped up Sony this quarter. I have a hypothesis (based on Clayton Christensen’s “law of conservation of attractive profits”) that although end user products may commoditise quickly in tech, the components and manufacturing equipment commoditise much more slowly. This seems to be what is happening. Please note that Sony components are not being buoyed by Apple alone. The WSJ article I linked to below describes how Chinese smartphones are lifting many Japanese companies and how the percentage of components made in Japan are actually higher for Chinese phones than for phones by Apple. Because of this, I totally agree with Bob that Samsung would be wiser to focus on the components to sell to the Chinese instead of racing to the bottom with the final products.
