iPad Pro: What To Expect On September 9th

This article is more than 8 years old.

Disclosure: I own a few shares of Apple stock.

At an Apple event on September 9th, the Cupertino giant is expected to announce the new line of iPhones, a brand new Apple TV, Apple Watch Sports bands and the iPad mini 4. Now sources with 9to5Mac are reporting that Apple will also introduce the 12.9-inch "iPad Pro" at the same event. However, the "iPad Pro" is likely going to start shipping in November after pre-orders begin in October.

Generally, Apple announces its new line of iPads in October every year. By introducing the "iPad Pro" in September, developers will have time to build apps specifically for the larger-size tablet by the time it arrives in stores.

Even though 9to5Mac’s sources said that the “iPad Pro” will debut next week, Apple could still potentially host an event in October to announce it. There are rumors floating around that Apple may potentially unveil a 21.5-inch iMac with a 4K display in October too.

Rumored "iPad Pro" Tech Specs

With a 12.9-inch display, the "iPad Pro" -- which will compete against Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 -- is larger than the 11-inch MacBook Airs and about the same size as the 13-inch MacBook Pros. The resolution on the "iPad Pro" is believed to be 2732×2048 at 263-pixels-per-inch. The “iPad Pro” is rumored to have an A9 processor, 2GB RAM, USB 3.0 ports, a stylus that supports Force Touch and speakers on both sides of the device. There is speculation that the storage options for the "iPad Pro" will range from 64GB to 512GB. And the "iPad Pro" is expected to have iOS 9.1 installed out of the box when it starts shipping in November.

What about the iPad Air and iPad mini?

The 7.9-inch iPad mini 4 should be announced on September 9th as well, but there is unlikely going to be an iPad Air update this year. Most likely, a new iPad Air will be announced in 2016. The iPad mini 4 will likely contain upgrades for its processor speeds, memory and camera megapixels that will bring it up to speed with the iPad Air 2. The iPad Air 2 has an A8X chip with 64-bit architecture, an M8 motion coprocessor and 2GB LPDDR3 RAM.

What Makes The Announcement Location Interesting

This year, Apple is hosting the September 9th event at the Bill Graham auditorium in San Francisco instead of the Flint Center in Cupertino. The Bill Graham auditorium can fit 7,000 people, which indicates that Apple plans to make all of its major product announcements at one big event in September rather than hosting a separate event in October for iPads.
