4K 21.5-Inch iMac Coming Next Week?

The updated iMacs will be available on Oct. 13, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple might soon bring 4K screens to the 21-inch iMac.

According to 9to5Mac, the machines go on sale Oct. 13, but Apple will boost its production substantially in November ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

According to 9to5Mac's sources, the new iMacs will come with the same design as the previous generation, but feature faster graphics cards to go along with the improved resolution. The company's current 21.5-inch iMac comes with a 1,920-by-1,080-pixel resolution. The new iMacs could come with a resolution of 4,096 by 2,304, according to the report.

If Apple ends up launching a 4K iMac, it would sit alongside the 5K Retina model it already offers for those seeking a 27-inch screen. The iMac with Retina 5K has a resolution 5,120 by 2,880, making it slightly better than the 4K model that could be shipping in the coming days.

If 9to5Mac's sources are correct, the timing of Apple's iMac launch makes some sense. After all, Apple last month launched its new iPhones and is planning to release the Apple TV at the end of October, followed by the iPad Pro in November. Why not throw in a new Mac, too?

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is not the first time we've heard about a 4K iMac. Earlier this year, 9to5Mac said the OS X El Capitan beta suggested the device might be in the works, following that up several months later with rumors of an October launch.
