A former Apple employee wrecked a luxury flat, causing more than £10,000 of damage with his own waste.

Robert Kummer, 37, stored his urine and excrement in bottles and bags.

The German computer worker had even smeared his excrement on the walls, floors and ceilings.

Fire crews had to wear breathing gear to inspect the disgusting scene, Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard.

Authorities were called in in September 2013 when a neighbour became concerned about the smell coming from the flat - thinking it was a dead body.

Fire crews called to the apartment at Fitton Street in Cork City centre and were overcome by the smell of excrement, which had seeped through the floor boards of the apartment.

Kummer had smeared his faeces on the walls, floors and ceiling of the premises over a three-month period, reports the Irish Mirror.

Fire Brigade personnel and gardai were left completely baffled as the toilet facilities in the flat were fully functional.

Bizarrely, friends and colleagues of Kummer were completely unaware of his habits.

He appeared to have good personal hygiene and washed his clothes regularly at a local laundry.

Garda Lorraine O’Donovan said that when she went to the flat she was confronted by the “most bizarre and unbelievable conditions”.

She said she initially feared “that something untoward had happened.”

“There was clothing everywhere and bags of excrement. I could see excrement all over the bedroom and there was bottles of a yellow substance.”

Kummer initially lied to her and said he had just returned from a trip to the States.

He later told gardai he had just stopped caring about the apartment arising out of personal problems.

Judge Sean O Donnabhain was told that all the floor boards in the flat had to be replaced and that the premises required almost industrial levels of cleaning to restore it.

The court heard that Kummer had been in an emotional state in the months preceding the discovery at the flat arising out of the cancer diagnosis of his mother.

Kummer pleaded guilty to criminal damage. The offences occurred between June and September 2013.

Psychiatrist John Dennehy said that Kummer was at a loss to explain his actions and that they could only be attributed to depression. It is understood he now deeply regrets his actions.

Kummer has raised just €800 in compensation in the years since he was arrested in connection with the offence.

Judge O Donnabhain described it as an “extraordinary” case.

He said: “This is a most unusual case. It is bizarre. It is essentially a case of fouling the property.

"The accused had every opportunity to pay (sizeable compensation) but he did not do so.

“It is now likely that there is going to be no recompense for the landlord.”

He said having examined a report from a psychiatrist it seems that Kummer, who is a former Apple worker, may have suffered a “depressive episode.”

He jailed him for a year in connection with the offence.
