Apple has released the fifth beta version of OS X El Capitan 10.11.2 to Mac users in the beta testing programs.

The new beta arrives as build 15C48a and continues to focus on improving reliability and compatibility of OS X El Capitan, with a particular emphasis on networking, wi-fi, Mail, Calendar, Graphics, Notes, USB, Photos app, and Spotlight.

Mac users with existing beta builds of OS X 10.11.2 can find beta 5 available now from the Mac App Store, or through the downloads section of the Mac Developer website.

The Public Beta of the same release is also available, as Apple typically coincides release of public beta and developer beta builds.

Though there is not a known public timeline for OS X 10.11.2 to release to the general public, Apple typically goes through several beta versions before issuing the final build. Thus one may reasonably expect to see the final version out sometime in the coming weeks, perhaps alongside the final build of iOS 9.2 which is also currently in beta.

Hi Joel, this sounds strange … as a public beta tester you had to install a piece of software before, so in the AppStore under your AppleID, beta-versions were shown to be updated, did you disable in settings > AppStore menu this option before downloading the last GoldMaster El Capitan 10.11.1 by doing reinstallation on Recovery HD ?? … or try under “already bought article” to download 10.11.1 … otherwise the AppStore seems to be temporary unavailable of some technical reasons.

For me, public betas 1-4 of 10.11.2 were just fine on a brand new MacBook (the paper thin 12′ one) Beta 5 is terrible. Messages, FaceTime, Calendar and Contacts constantly freeze and when typing in any app, the keyboard will suddenly freeze for a few seconds. Anything typed in that timeframe is not reflected. Erased my startup disk as described by Ron above, but when reinstalling El Capitan it now says ‘this item is temporarily unavailable (from the App Store). Try again later.’ Very frustrating.

I had no issues with el capitan, until I installed the update! Now all messed up, time machine not working (I did get it to work once), now not working again, and not recognizing base station, nothing shows up using airport utility. Had to turn off energy saver, computer freezes when asleep. Also, computer freezes intermittently for reasons I cannot correlate, Safari crash reports but safari windows still open and working, too many strange happenings to mention or remember :( Looked up uninstalling and it seems like a hassle and since I now cannot connect to my backup? I would have to create another using another external disk …. Do you think the next update is soon? and will solve these issues? I have a newer laptop with 16 GM Memory: Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014, so it should not be an issue.

Beta software often messes things up. This is why you should not run beta software. Stick to the final versions. Beta software is for developers and advanced users who don’t mind everything breaking. Frankly, even the ‘final’ versions of software from Apple are basically beta versions too. Don’t update any software, that’s the best route with Apple today.

    • Ron Ironsmith says:

Cynthia, what bummsies wrote is true, beta versions in any state are slowing down system performance and could raise additional troubles, personally I just use beta versions as a developer on further instances or machines. In your case it looks like you should rollback to version 10.11.1, look at my post above concerning reinstallation El Capitan from scratch, instead of a clone you can use your time machine (if the data is still available on it !!) for personal setup during configuration of reloaded 10.11.1 … I don’t think so the final GoldMaster 10.11.2 version will solve your troubles just by updating only … good luck.

Just putting my 2c in here.. 10.11.1 has been nothing but solid on my 2010 MBP (2.66 i7, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd)

I’m using an iMac8,1 (2008, 6GB RAM, 2.66 GHZ, WD 640GB Blue HDD) with 3 different partitions on it (OSX 10.6/10.9/10.11). For each HDD partition I have an external firewire clone too, since I reinstalled El Capitan from scratch on an empty HDD 10.11 partition again with configuring the personal data and settings from external clone, it is working perfectly now and very performant like my SnowLeopard 10.6 partition on the same HDD … for those people have performance issues under 10.11 try to do this.

NOW, I’ll try El Capitan, tks :)

… over years users normally upgrade a newer OSX system based on an older one to keep personal settings and data.

install guide for El Capitan scratch reinstallation:
      – clone your current OSX 10.11 with personal data and settings
      – restart with CMD+R to start recovery HD
      – on recovery HD use disk-utility to delete data on prev. 10.11 part.
      – install 10.11 base system from recovery HD, Internet con. required
      – during setup the new 10.11 use config from ext. clone you made

      … done

I use the same iMac 8.1 from 2008 – but with only 4 GB RAM. I also made a clean install on an empty harddisk. And El Capitan runs perfectly, as “fast” as my ageing Core 2 Duo 2,66 Mhz processor allows.

      Greetings, Jens from Denmark

Looks like I’ll be waiting for the next update for VoiceOver improvements. Still buggy as hell. Guess I’ll have to keep working around the issues. :(

  7. Wharf Xanadu says:

iOS 9.2 comes on tomorrow too

  8. Chad says:

I went back to GM releases after a recent catastrophe. I’m done with beta testing… but to each his own.

  9. Robert says:

El Capitan has been a general disappointment. Sometimes difficult to install and it does seem to hog memory and slow response times. Any improvement is welcome. Perhaps Apple might also look to the OS interaction with Microsoft Office. Opening an Office app takes about 30 seconds. With the last edition of Yosemite it took about five.

    • Evgen says:

O,rly? I have Macbook pro late 2008 with 8 gigs of RAM and freshly installed SSD running El Capitan with most latest updates. I have MSOffice and you know what? It starts in 2-3 sec right after I reboot the machine.

      • Patrick M. says:

Exactly, everything works fine for me.

        • Luke says:

I have the newest 15″ retina MacBook Pro with El Capitan and office starts in less than two seconds. I don’t think its an El Capitan problem…

      • John says:

        hi.

Have you installed 10.11.2? I have macbook 2008 and the update failed so I had to restore from a backup.
I tried a couple of times and the install never finished (hung about two-thirds of the way through)

    • David Dunn says:

My experience with El Capitan was even worse. It seems to be hostile to Google docs and sheets as well as with Microsoft Office items particularly Word and Excel.

From a shutdown to a browser opening up took over 9 minutes. It has disabled my wired keyboard and mouse from time to time. It doesn’t seem to like Google chrome either.

It’s a piece of junk. It’s evidently worse than Windows 10. If you haven’t downloaded it, my advise is, don’t.

There’s no particular advantage of a Mac over a PC. If you use gmail and Google Chrome, then transition to PCs is fairly easy. PCs are more like a Mac now.

  10. Tom says:

I’ve installed the released GM of El Capitan. Question: is installing this beta version advised? Not really looking to cause software conflict issues.
