Layoffs continue in Microsoft's mobile division: Report
In July 2015, the company announced that it is cutting up to 7,800 positions primarily in the phone business.
NEW DELHI: Microsoft is reportedly laying off "dozens" more employees its mobile business, according to a report in the Finnish newspaper Helsigin Sanomat. According to the report, job cuts are happening in Finland and targeting those involved in marketing.
Finland-based Microsoft's mobile subsidiary is called Microsoft Mobile Oy. It was created following software giant Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's handset business.
In July 2015, the company announced that it is cutting up to 7,800 positions primarily in the phone business. These job cuts came after an organisation-wide reorganization in which the company’s mobile phone business was merged with the overall Windows-and-devices group.
Microsoft spokesperson, however, told Zdnet that the job cuts happening now are not part of the original 7,800, the majority of which were focused on those involved in the phone business.
"The job reductions were spread across more than one business area and country and reflect adaptations to business needs. We go through this process in the most thoughtful manner possible, with the deepest respect for affected individuals," the spokesperson told Zdnet.
The Redmond, Washington-based company recently reported $5 billion in profit on nearly $24 billion in sales for the quarter ending December 31. Revenue and profit were both down from a year ago, but after adjusting for deferred revenue and one-time costs, the numbers were better than Wall Street analysts expected.
Microsoft beat Wall Street's estimates for sales in key segments. Those include its cloud-computing segment, which lets commercial customers run their businesses on Microsoft's servers, and the division that sells PC software, Surface tablets and Xbox gaming consoles.
