Survey: More Developers Now Use OS X Than Linux, Swift Second Most Loved Language

Developer survey results released by Stack Overflow reveal a number of interesting facts about the state of app development in 2016, not the least of which include the growing popularity of OS X and Swift. The site says it surveyed more than 56,000 coders across 173 countries, calling it “the most comprehensive developer survey ever conducted.”

The survey results indicate that more developers now use OS X than all of the flavors of Linux combined as their primary operating system. If current adoption rates remain steady, next year may see fewer than half of developers using Windows.

In the mobile development ranks, more developers were still coding for Android than iOS, with a 61.9% versus 47.5% count. However, in the development language arena, Apple’s Swift language continues to advance, being used by almost one-third of all developers, and ranking second among most loved languages, coming in behind Rust.

In addition to the above numbers, the comprehensive survey also asked developers such important questions as “Star Wars vs. Star Trek”, and whether the developer self-identified as a “Rockstar or Ninja.”

10% of respondents self-identified as Ninjas. Real ninjas don’t tell you they’re ninjas. They just sneak up on you and slit your throat, which we’re pretty sure constitutes a “hostile workplace environment”.

The full survey results are available from the Stack Overflow website, and is recommended reading for anyone interested in the state of the developer community today.
