GPU SHOOTOUT:
'early 2016' MacBook versus others

Posted April 28th, 2016 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

Back on April 21st we published CPU and Storage benchmarks for the 'early 2016' MacBook Retina 12-inch versus the 'early 2015' MacBook Retina 12-inch and the Razer Blade Stealth UHD. In this article, we have some GPU benchmarks to chew on.

GPU GRAPH LEGEND
Blade Stealth 12.5" = 'early 2016' Razer Blade Stealth UHD, 12.5 inch (3940x2160) IGZO screen, 2.5GHz Core i7-6500U processor, Intel HD Graphics 520, 512GB PCIe based flash storage, 8G of 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory; Windows 10
MacBook 2016 1.3 = 'early 2016' MacBook Retina 12 inch (2304x1440) IPS screen, 1.3GHz Core M7 processor, Intel HD Graphics 515, 512GB PCIe based flash storage, 8G of 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory, OS X 10.11
MacBook 2015 1.2 = 'early 2015' MacBook Retina 12 inch (2304x1440) IPS screen, 1.2GHz Core M processor, Intel HD Graphics 5300, 512GB PCIe based flash storage, 8G of 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory, OS X 10.11

GPUTest FurMark
This is a very intensive OpenGL benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that's why FurMark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called the 'GPU burner') for the graphics processor. (HIGHEST Frames per Second = FASTEST)

GFXBench 3
We ran the OpenGL animation of a T-Rex chasing a motocross rider in 1080p Offscreen model. (HIGHEST Frames per Second = FASTEST)

Heaven 4
This OpenGL benchmark does a fly-by through the magical steampunk world of shiny brass, wood and gears, sun-heated cobblestone streets, fluffy clouds, and a majestic dragon. (HIGHEST average Frames per Second = FASTEST)

LuxMark 3
The rendering speed of the LuxBall scene is measured in Thousands of Samples per Second. (HIGHEST KSamples/sec = FASTEST)

WHAT DID WE LEARN?
The 2016 Retina Macbook with the Intel HD Graphics 515 produces OpenGL performance from 36% to 65% better than the 2015 Retina MacBook's Intel HD Graphics 5300.

As for OpenCL performance, the 2016 was only 8% faster.

The Razer Blade Stealth with the Intel HD Graphics 520 runs OpenGL FurMark 14% slower than the fastest 2016 MacBook. However, the Razer Blade laptop runs T-Rex 56% faster and Heaven 23% faster. As for OpenCL LuxMark, the Razer is 15% faster.
