As promised, CarPlay compatibility now available on all 2017 Fords; Hyundai Elantra too

Ford announced back in January that all 2017 models would offer CarPlay compatibility through its Sync 3 infotainment system, and the company has today confirmed that this applies across its full range of vehicles: cars, SUVs, light trucks and electrified vehicles. You will, of course, have to purchase Sync 3 as an option if it is not included as standard in your chosen vehicle.

The first 2017 models are already on sale at dealerships, including the Escape, Fusion, Mustang and Explorer, with others due later this year. In addition, the company has promised to bring CarPlay to 2016 models equipped with Sync 3, though the wording – ‘opportunity to upgrade’ – sounds like you’ll have to pay for the privilege …

Tech research firm SBD said that by making CarPlay an option across its complete range of vehicles, it was taking the guesswork out of it for consumers.

The guesswork for consumers is over – if you buy any 2017 Ford vehicle with SYNC 3, you drive off the lot with both of these innovative technologies ready to go.

Those with older vehicles are not left out completely: Ford last year added Siri Eyes Free compatibility to more than 5M Sync-equipped vehicles dating back to 2011, to at least provide some access to Siri, though not full CarPlay functionality.

Hyundai has also announced that CarPlay support will be an option on the 2017 Elantra. CarPlay is already an option for the 2017 BMW M3 and M4, as well as the 2017 Honda Accord.

CarPlay is compatible with the iPhone 5 and up, giving access to Siri voice controls, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Phone, Messages and a range of third party apps. iOS 10 boosts CarPlay’s functionality with the ability to remove unused apps from your vehicle’s homescreen, rearrange apps exactly as per an iOS device and an updated version of Apple Music.
