Microsoft Simplifies Authenticator Apps, Lets You Sign in on Apple Watch

The new Microsoft Authenticator app will give Microsoft users an easier way to secure the login process.

Microsoft Authenticator Apps

Microsoft is moving to simplify its Authenticator apps for business and personal accounts, merging them into one app and extending availability on iOS.

On Aug. 15, Microsoft Authenticator will be available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, giving those with personal Microsoft and/or Azure AD accounts an easier way to secure the login process.

With two-factor authentication, you can supplement the sign-in process on your accounts by having a code texted to your device or by using an authenticator app. For awhile now, Microsoft has had separate authenticator apps for Azure customers and users of its consumer services like Outlook.com. Now, they will be merged into one app.

Consumers will also gain access on iOS; right now, the consumer authenticator app is only available on Windows phone and Android. Those with the Android app will be prompted to install the new authenticator app come Aug. 15; those with the Azure app will be asked to update.

Once the update rolls out, the new Microsoft Authenticator will support wearables like Apple Watch ($300.00 at eBay) or Samsung Gear devices. Just click the "approve" button in the notification to complete your login. Android and iOS will also support fingerprint authentication, while enterprise customers can sign in with a certificate rather than a password.

Looking ahead, Microsoft says it will offer new updates at a "very rapid pace."
