Tim Cook reportedly hosting Hillary Clinton fundraiser next month following Paul Ryan event

Apple CEO Tim Cook is reportedly hosting a political fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign next month, according to Buzzfeed. As the report notes, Cook will be hosting the event as a private citizen as Apple doesn’t have a political action committee like other companies, although Apple’s Lisa Jackson will also be in attendance. Jackson serves as the company’s VP of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. While the fundraiser itself isn’t so much surprising for Cook, it does follow a prior political fundraiser hosted by Cook for Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan…

From Buzzfeed’s report:

Cook, joined by Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, will help raise money for the Hillary Victory Fund, according to an invitation obtained by BuzzFeed News. The fund is a joint fundraising committee that contributes to the Clinton campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and 38 state parties. The fundraiser will take place on August 24, with an address to be provided to guests.

Cook’s interest in supporting members of both political parties reflects his and Apple’s interest on various key issues. Tax reform tends to be more in line with the Republican Party while social issues like marriage equality tend to be embraced by the Democratic Party. Both parties, however, tend to wrestle with privacy issues regarding encryption.

The Apple CEO did take some heat last month from Democratic Party leaders when word spread that he was hosting a fundraiser for Paul Ryan and House Republicans. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi suggested Tim Cook received bad advice that led to the event. Ryan has publicly endorsed Donald Trump in the presidential election while Apple decided to sit out of technological and financial support in this year’s Republican National Convention.

Lisa Jackson’s support for Clinton especially comes as no surprise. The Apple VP openly endorsed Clinton for President back in January and Jackson led the EPA under the Obama administration prior to joining Apple.
