Connecting an Amazon Kindle to a Windows 10 machine will trigger a catastrophic Blue Screen of Death crash – forcing a reboot, users have reported.

Dozens users running Windows 10 Anniversary Update have complained their computers crash when plugging in Amazon Kindles.

The issue appears to be linked to the latest update to the next-generation operating system, Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Amazon Paperwhite and Voyage Kindles appear to be affected.

The glitch occurs when connecting the devices over USB to transfer purchases ebooks, or trying to recharge the device from a home computer or laptop.

Some Kindle owners have claimed Windows 10 will only crash when the e-reader is plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

Others disagree, reporting the Blue Screen of Death glitch will be triggered no matter what port is used.

Posting on Microsoft's own support forums, one users complained: "On Tuesday, I upgraded to the Anniversary Edition of Windows 10.

"Last night, for the first time since the upgrade, I mounted my Kindle by plugging it into a USB 2 port. I immediately got the blue screen with the QR code.

"I rebooted and tried several different times, even using a different USB cable, but that made no difference."

Another forum poster added: "Same issue with two desktops and two Kindles: one PC is home built with Win10 Pro.

"The other, a Dell with Windows 10 Home. Both fail with a BSOD [Blue Screen of Death] when I plug the Kindle into a USB 3 port.

"Both work fine when I plug the Kindle into a USB 2 port.

"Both worked with USB 3 ports prior to the Anniversary Update. Oddly, my Surface Pro3 which has only one USB3 port works fine."

Microsoft is aware of the problem.

The US technology firm has released a short statement, saying: “We are aware of an issue with a small number of Kindle Voyager and Paperwhite e-Readers causing an unexpected behaviour when plugged into Windows 10 devices after installing the Anniversary Update.

"We are currently working on an update to address this issue."

This has played havoc with a number of third-party webcams, since the update changes how Windows 10 handles decoding certain webcam video streams.

Both network-connected and hard-wired USB webcams have been affected by the issue.

For many users, webcams now freeze as soon as they try to load. That leaves video chat apps, including Microsoft's own Skype, impossible to use.

The changes in Windows 10 Anniversary Update are designed to improve performance.

Microsoft has confirmed that computers with the Windows 10 operating system stored on a solid-state drive and applications and data saved to a separate drive can run into issues.

Some users saw their systems freeze whenever they clicked on the Start menu, or tried to load an application from the taskbar.

The freeze does not occur when Windows 10 is started in Safe Mode.

, but, in the meantime, has offered a temporary fix.

"You can work around this issue by signing into Windows 10 using Safe Mode to move your apps and data to the same drive as your operating system," .
