An Australian man has received Google’s new Pixel phone a week before its official release date thanks to an apparent postal mix-up.

Reddit user wooparse shared photos of the Pixel online, explaining he had pre-ordered the phone from Australian phone company Telstra who dispatched it a little early.

The new phone, Google’s first full competitor to the iPhone, doesn’t actually go on sale until October 20.

“The email I received said for delivery on the 20th but was immediately with a courier for delivery,” he explained.

The tech fan has since been answering dozens of questions from intrigued Redditors who have pre-ordered the phone or are thinking about buying one.

He has also provided a detailed ‘hands on’ review of the Pixel, sharing his thoughts on the phone’s specifications including storage, camera, display and battery.

The Redditor also shared photos and videos he captured while experimenting with his new phone, with a little help from his pet dog.

“I hope I've provided some sort of help and relief to those contemplating and waiting on a new phone,” he concluded.

Another Reddit user, who claims to be a Telstra Rep, responded: “Knew this would happen. Somehow, in some way, whoever looks after pre-orders always manages to ship out devices a week early.”

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are the first smartphones designed by the company and which bear its name. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Telegraph’s Technology Editor James Titcomb explains: “Building a world-class phone is an immense challenge, even for a company of Google’s resources, and the Pixel looks like a very good attempt. Design-wise it is not the world’s most appealing phone (although it is far from the worst) although it is comfortable and easy to use.

“More important is performance, and it looks like the Pixel could excel here. With a world-beating camera and the power of Google’s AI behind it, it could well stand up to the likes of Samsung and Apple. But at an eyewatering £599 and up, it will have to.”
