Apple Updates Its Battery Service Policy To Include AirPods, Here Are The Details

Apple has only just been able to release its AirPods wireless earphones, and while few people have them in their hands, or in their ears, attentions have already turned to how much it will cost to get the batteries within them replaced should they go back.

As with all electronic devices that require a battery, it’s possible that the AirPods themselves will outlast the batteries that power them, meaning they will need to be replaced. Replacing batteries can be an expensive business, so what about the AirPods?

As many have spotted, Apple has updated the iPhone portion of its website to reflect its new battery replacement process for AirPods rather than, as would perhaps make most sense, the AirPods area of the site. Regardless, as with iPhones that receive free battery replacements within warranty periods or as part of AppleCare, it appears a similar system is in place for AirPods.

The virtues of AppleCare have been discussed to death previously, but if you are at all worried about warranties or devices failing outside of those warranties, AppleCare may be worth checking out. If you own AppleCare and a pair of AirPods, then it may be worth checking everything’s sufficiently registered with Apple in order for the coverage to be included.

The table below, taken from the support section of the Apple website, clearly shows that any out of warranty repair or replacement, so long as AppleCare is not available, will cost $49.

If we are reading that correctly, and given the fact AppleCare does not appear to be a product purchasable against the AirPods on their own, buyers of iPhones will be able to attach their new AirPods to existing AppleCare plans in a way similar to that which owners of AirPort routers and Macs were able to, prior to the former’s removal from Apple’s lineup recently, though unofficially.
