Birmingham New Street evacuated over bomb scare at Apple store

A SECTION of Birmingham's New Street was this morning evacuated over a bomb scare.

Police cordoned off a section of the busy shopping area after a suspicious package was handed into the Apple store.

West Midlands Police said: "Police have cordoned off a small section of New Street in Birmingham city centre as a precaution following reports that a suspicious package was handed in to the Apple store.

"The store has been evacuated as a precaution while specialist officers examine the package."

The Apple store has since reopened, police say.

Locals tweeted about the bomb scare, with user Areti asking: "What happened to the new apple shop on new street Birmingham? Police and police taped it off."

The UK is on high alert after a suspected terrorist hijacked a lorry and ploughed it into crowds at a Christmas market in Berlin.

Trains into Birmingham New Street were reportedly affected by the scare.

Katie Mulligan tweeted: "Absolute carnage this morning @VirginTrains at Bham New Street, trains to London!!"

A section of London's Fenchurch Street was also cordoned off this morning over bomb fears.

Police searched the area and evacuated people, but it has since reopened.
