Whatever happened to serving a meal on a bog-standard plate? Trendy restaurants are coming up with more unique ways to present their delicious creations – captured by the rather brilliant @wewantplates – with one restaurant opting for the extravagant option of iPads instead of plates.

Spanish chef Elena Arzak has been using the gadget as a serving dish since 2013, with the Michelin-starred Quince Restaurant in San Francisco now also adopting the trend.

Restaurant owner and chef Michael Tusk presents his ‘A Dog in Search of Gold’ dish on top of an Apple device protected by a custom-designed box which fully protects the iPad.

A sheet of glass is placed on top of the iPad, which plays a clip of dogs hunting for truffles, before it is slid into the  protective box.

Chef Tusk explains the dish includes a “chestnut crisp and a celeriac, porcini and ricotta truffle’ dusted with porcini powder”.

He added: “We have done this dish two years straight.”

Some tweeted concerns about potential hygiene issues, mistakenly believing the truffles were served directly on top of iPads, however Mr Tusk told CNET that isn’t the case.

“The iPad slips in and out of the box and we designed a sheath that is cleaned after each order. The food does not directly sit on top of the iPad at all,” he said.

“The iPads are removable and sit on top of a cleanable screen that is sanitized after every order.”

Thanks to @quince_sf for an incredible meal and letting me eat off of an iPad 💸💸 *** #michelin #wewantplates
