HP Recalls Affected Laptops: Another Lithium-Battery Related Caused Overheating And Explosion
Caroline SorianoAnother lithium-battery related incident has caused a major company to recall its product. HP or Hewlett-Packard has recalled the affected laptops such as HP ENVY, HP ProBook, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion notebooks sold from Mar 2013 up to Oct 2016. The unit's batteries have the tendency to overheat that could pose fire and burn hazards.
However, according to The Verge, the issue about HP's overheating batteries is limited unlike with the large numbers of Samsung-related fiasco. Last year, Galaxy Note 7's explosion had affected too many units, causing serious damage its users. It has even forced some airlines to band the affected Samsung units while boarding.
According to an HP spokesperson, less than one percent of the HP units sold on a specific time range had been affected. The American brand stated that it received only a single additional report about a battery overheating which caused property damage. Most of the batteries that have been recalled came from Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Daily Mail reported that the area with the most affected units are from the US, while there are about 4,000 recalled laptops from Mexico. Meanwhile, there are about 3,000 HP devices that were recollected from Canada. Most of the laptops were bought from online and big-box retailers.
HP, in cooperation with several government regulatory agencies, have announced the expansion of a "June 2016 worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for certain notebook computer batteries," the firm said.
This is not the first time for HP to experience fire-related recalls concern. Back in 2014, the brand had to come up with a decision to recall over six million laptop cords because there were reports about it overheating.
Meanwhile, the brand promises to provide a replacement battery for the affected batteries once verified, at no cost. Users are free to check in case their batteries are qualified for recall. The batteries are black in color and are under these bar codes: 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL or 6EBVA.
