Washing. It’s good for the soul, good for the heart, and good for your health. I love to scrub myself and / or my surroundings as much as the next person, but God knows I would be so much happier if I could also wash my phone.

Would this cleanse me of my addiction? No. Stop me from staring at a bright screen a few feet away from my face first thing in the morning and last thing at night until I’m numbed to reality? Again, no. But it might symbolically cleanse me and in this world that’s the best we can hope for. Not convinced? Just look at this video:

The handset in question is the “rafre” from Japanese firm Kyocera. It’s the successor to 2015’s “DIGNO rafre” (which was the first washable smartphone) and is resistant to both foaming hand soap and foaming body soap. (I’m not sure what the difference is here, but Kyocera makes a point of mentioning both.) The rest of the specs aren’t so spectacular — 3,000 mAh battery, Android 7.0 Nougat, 2GB RAM, 5-inch HD display — but who cares when you’ve got a phone you can use as a loofah.

The rafre goes on sale in Japan in March this year, but let’s hope that, like emoji and NFC, this innovation is exported to the West soon. We’ve already got waterproofing, but we need wash-proofing. Whoever gets there first will clean up.
