RawTherapee 5.0 released with new tools, faster performance and bug fixes

@ogniw - I experienced no performance issues with previous versions, so that's not a reason in itself to use RT more.

Deciding which option to use when there are so many that can achieve a certain result in different ways is difficult. It's not a matter of just searching among all the sliders for the ones I've been using in the past, and ignoring all the rest as "noise"; not when I know that some of the alternative new options can potentially be better. So I end up trying different redundant options to achieve the result I want, and I waste a lot of time in the process. They should just figure out what is best and remove all the excess features from the GUI, or hide them by default. I had no issues with usability of RT until a 2 years ago, but versions I've tried since have been gradually becoming more and more confusing to use.

@ogniw (cont') - It's nice to see that an archive of the old forum is still there. I thought the plan was to delete it. Is it not anymore? What I liked about the old forum was that better organization and easier to read layout. The current setup with all discussions in one flat list is a mess, and the way tags are used doesn't help much.

I don't know when it will be deleted but probably it will stay on NSA mass storage for ever :P

@Prognathous - There's a development branch in which they're working on a "favourite tools" feature. When it will be fully implemented, you'll be able to just keep the tools you use regularly, and hide the unwanted tools.

It's not only about hiding. I don't know which of the many redundant tools is best. I expect the project lead (or whoever is the equivalent of a product manager here) to come to this conclusion and by default only display the best set of tools. I don't want to do research on all tools and spend hours to find out which is best.

I would just go to their forum and ask "what's the best tool to do <this or that>?", and a number of advanced users and/or developers would guide you. But you said you don't like the new forum... I don't know what to tell you, besides to stick with the software you like best.

So basically RT still does NOT support MFT.

It does not support MFT lens distortion correction. More precise: It does not read the correction data which is embedded in the MFT raw files.

That means it does not support

I have a brand new Windows 10 machine and RT 5.0 works perfectly, and fast.

Works for me on Win10pro x64, although make sure you have the updated 5.0-r1 version.

If this is the goal with RT, then there is no question that you have achieved your goal to one hundred percent.

What about compressed Fuji X-Trans (like the files from X-Pro 2)? I don't think RT handles those or new compressed GFX 50s raw files.

This is only a problem if you're trying to run it off a thumb-drive.

My Lightroom 6.8 is 1.8G in the 64-bit program directory, but 630M is camera and lens profiles.

I know quite all of this - but i've never used the development versions, because 2times i used them over the past 2 years, it crashed...after some time of tweaking an image...and therefore, no more betas again from RT. As i wrote before, i used to use RT since 2.4.1. But switched over to DT (DarkTable), and other RAW Converters.

You're looking at the wrong version of RT 5.0.

That's the newest version of RT 5.0 that released on Feb 5th 2017.

Next time read my post more than once before just posting a response. You're in significant error.

My comment included the point that RT 5.0 with r1 [revision 1] in the full name was new, and had Win 7 problems.

RT 5.0 released in January 2017, I'll check the install date on my computer later for an exact day in January that I installed it. Obviously then RT 5.0 would have to have released that day or earlier.

Here's the very short clear paragraph from my original comment that you completely missed:

There are tons of options. For a "luminosity slider" option, here's what you do: In the exposure tab (first tab), find the L*a*b* Adjustments section.

There, you can use the LH (Luminosity by Hue) widget to pick the appropriate blue hue from your sky, and drag the luminence down.

There are also many other ways, such as during the Monochrome conversion, colour filters, etc.

Actually the new wavelet tool is quite advanced but you can get very interesting results out of it like you can blur or 'sharpening' selective frequencies. In that way you can simulate different lenses. You can do that for color too. I think, it's the same like with cameras, if you want to do something new you need a deeper understanding of the theories behind. Otherwise a phone is enough. ;-)
