Computer company Dell has started to use packaging made from recycled plastics collected from rivers and beaches for its products.

The move is part of a pilot programme aimed at reducing the amount of plastic polluting oceans and waterways.

The firm plans to sell its XPS13 device in the recycled plastic trays from 30 April and estimates the programme will keep 7,257kg of plastic from entering oceans this year.

It will also include educational information on its packaging to try to raise awareness of the issue.

Each packaging tray will also be stamped with a symbol indicating it is recyclable.

The company said 25% each tray will be made from the plastics taken from beaches and rivers, with the other 75% of the ingredients coming from other recycled plastics.

A recent study found that between 4.8 and 12.7 million metric tons of mismanaged plastic waste entered the earth's oceans in 2010 alone.
