Apple Suddenly Confirms Three New iPhones

This article is more than 7 years old.

There was no big build-up, no sign of the traditional hype that surrounds the launch of a new iPhone (the Store went down for a few hours) but today Apple put all that pomp and ceremony aside and gave the world three new iPhones…

To mark the first expansion of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus since their launch in September 2016, Apple is making PRODUCT(RED) special editions of both phones in 128GB and 256GB capacities with prices starting from $749 and $869 respectively.

“The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in an official statement.

Yes, the lack of a 64GB entry level model is a shame but the extra outlay is rewarded as Apple will be giving a proportion of profits from each model to the (PRODUCT)RED cause which fights to raise awareness and funds to help eliminate HIV/AIDS in Africa. Apple has done multiple product tie-ins with the organisation over the last decade and the special edition iPhones line-up alongside (PRODUCT)RED Apple Watch straps, iPhone cases and Beats equipment.

From a technical perspective the PRODUCT(RED) iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be identical to the existing models, but they do come with the inherent advantage of knowing you are helping a good cause.

Where Apple did make a specification change to its iPhones, however, was the introduction of an upgraded iPhone SE. Here Apple ditched the 16GB and 64GB models in favour of 32GB and 128GB options while retaining the same $399 and $499 price points.

While many would have hoped to see further upgrades to what is arguably the best value iPhone the company has ever released (particularly the front facing camera), the good news is it means Apple has finally ditched the awful 16GB storage tier across its entire range. And, once again, the rumours were right.

Pricing and Availability

Given the minor differences to existing models, Apple has announced both the PRODUCT(RED) iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus as well as the 32GB and 128GB iPhone SE will go on sale quickly. Sales start on March 24th with shipping from the end of March in the US and expanding to over 40 countries in April.

Apple has not stated for how long it will make the PRODUCT(RED) iPhones or how many it will produce, only telling Mashable it will be “a bunch”. Whatever that means.

So with all eyes on the overhauled iPhone 8 coming later this year, there is little doubt these new iPhones will not be the highlight of Apple’s 2017 plans. That said they do serve as a useful refresher just a week before Samsung reveals its own 2017 flagships in the shape of the redesigned Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.
