Apple claims Beats 1 is world’s ‘biggest radio station’

Beats 1 is the “biggest radio station in the world,” claims Apple Music’s head of content Larry Jackson.

“There’s no way you’re going to find another station that has as many concurrent listeners and audience-wise as Beats 1, period,” Jackson said in a new interview with various Apple Music execs.

Unfortunately, Jackson doesn’t provide any figures to back this assertion up, so we don’t know exactly how many “concurrent listeners” or just how big an audience that is.

Earlier this month it was reported that Apple Music rival Spotify has more than 50 million paid subscribers for its music streaming service. That’s more than double the 20 million subscribers Apple Music had at the end of 2016.

Given that the internationally available Beats 1 is competing against regional and national radio stations, however, there’s no doubt that it has a major edge when it comes to the radio space. It is also available to non-paying Apple Music listeners, which gives it a frankly enormous potential reach.

While Beats 1 hasn’t received too much publicity from Apple as of late, Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe last week reignited an old report that Apple is looking to launch additional Beats radio stations — hopefully aimed at expanding the music it offers to cater to different tastes.

According to Lowe, Apple is “working on” new Beats radio stations, although won’t introduce them until “they feel it’s right.”

“All those discussions are being had right now,” Lowe said. “Until we have something … Apple will go and work on things, and they present it when they feel it’s right. That’s the answer. We’re working on it.”
